(1) Name: Avory GRIMES
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Birth: before 1765 Virginia
Death: 1814-1815 Bourbon County, Kentucky Age: 49
Father: Philip GRIMES (1734-1806)

Misc. Notes
This family genealogy is taken by permission from a genealogy sent to me by Janice Grimes Van Natta (jkvnatta@swbell.net) on April 8, 2002.--REF

Avory Grimes I, b prior to 1765, died between 8 Nov 1814-6 Feb 1815, married about 1788/89 to Elizabeth Bates (she was b1778, died after 1850, buried Paynesville, MO, PIKE county). Avory was the son of Philip Grimes I born 1734, prob. in MD, (LDS records say Loudoun Co, VA), died 20 Feb 1806, (according to DAR record in Fayette Co, KY.) Father of Philip was Nicholas I (b probably 1693 in MD, died 1766 Loudoun Co, VA.)

Avory was a Revolutionary Soldier, is said to have come to Bourbon Co, Ky in 1782 from the South Branch of the Potomac River in Va. If this date is correct, then he must have preceeded his father, Philip Grimes to Ky. (Philip went to Fayette Co, KY in 1783, and built the Grimes Mill there) Avory settled on land between the towns of Clintonville & Austerlitz. In the first census (1790) he is listed as living in Bourbon Co, Ky., and in 1810 census was listed with 11 children, (5 boys and 6 girls) with 2 more born after this census. In 1810, he had 111 slaves, which indicates he was a man of wealth. He is known to have been in Bourbon Co, Ky as early as 1791,when his first child was born there. (NRG felt sure he was buried on this farm and thought they found a hewed rock marker to his grave in 1968.)DEATH: Believed to be buried in the Thomas Jefferson Grimes' plot, Bourbon Co, KY, where there is a small rock with "A.G." carved by hand. (family cem on the farm between Clintonville & Austerlitz, Ky). On 12 Jan 1813, Avory leased his sugar camp, trees, etc, to Jacob Ladd. A witness to this Article of Agreement was Wm Skinner.

His Will, Bourbon Co, Ky, will book "E", p 236, dated 8 Nov 1814, and probated 6 Feb 1815, mentions his widow, Elizabeth and children.

About 6 years after his death, Elizabeth married Wm Skinner, 3 Nov 1820, but they separated, and she moved to Pike County, Missouri.

Misc. Notes
Born, lived, died and buried on same farm in KY, which he owned after his father. Located 1.5 miles east of Clintonville, KY.

Thomas Jefferson & Kitty Scobee Grimes lived all their married lives on the farm between Clintonville & Austerlitz, Ky, Bourbon Co. This land was entered from the Govt by Philip I, who gave it to his son Avory I in 1814 (or it may have been Avory who entered this portion of land). Exactly when Thomas Jefferson bought or was given the title to it, we do not know. This is where his burial plot is located and where it is believed his father Avory also is buried. (Thomas J. has a nice stone-repaired in 1968). Also buried here are his daughter (with a stone) Rebecca Ann Grimes Stoner, a gr-dau Birdie Grimes, daughter of his son "Cuff" and several slaves.

After the death of Thomas Jefferson, Kitty lived on the farm with her son "Cuff" and his family until she sold abt 1883 or later, when she came to MO to make her home with her gr-dau, Anna Maria Smith Bealert & husband Ray Bealert. She had taken Annie when her mother died 1847/48, and raised her as her own. The Scobees are said to be of Scotch origin, and were from neighboring Clark County, Kentucky.
